Where’s the Happiness?

Oh, I can annoy people when I ask, “Who can know what’s good?” when something “bad” happens. But what’s really bad? It’s when things don’t match what we expect, when they make us feel scared, mad, or sad.

I also get upset when I see hate, not knowing, tricks, and meanness. But then, I find a way to see things differently or ask for help to feel better.

We humans are wired to survive, not just have fun. I’ve been through tough stuff, and now when I look back, it’s like a movie.

In the Sad Movie version: a parent’s death, bad things happening when I was young, problems with eating, getting super tired, marriage ending, sickness, …

But if I change the story to an Exciting Movie: I moved to a foreign place after school, did cool things outside, travelled India with my kids, built a house by a river, rode a Harley, did really well in sales, took big risks with money, flew a parachute and a plane, climbed rocks, got an award for coaching, tried medicinal plant stuff in the jungle, learned tantra in Thailand…

That’s two versions of the past. We humans like to use the past to guess what’s coming. This bothers me. We also copy how our caregivers acted or try really hard to do things in a totally different way, but sometimes we still act stubborn, not open, upset, mean, dramatic, or scared, just like they did. It’s so scary that I wrote a song about it.

Where’s the Happiness?

Now comes the fun part: as time goes on, we start to notice things. And there’s a chance we can stay curious and try new things. We can forget about the past and let amazing things happen. We don’t need to push or pull or do too much, like watching too much TV or doing things that are temporarily fun but limiting. We can learn to look at things in a new way, being ok with not knowing what will happen, being ok with what we feel – all the different feelings. That’s when the energy starts moving…

Where’s the Happiness?

The happiness is in more playfully being here now, doing what you’re doing with dedication, and looking at the bright side instead of the dark side. When you feel scared, mad, or sad, think of it like a sign to talk to someone, learn something, and understand things better. I’m still learning… learning to talk better, see things clearer, not get too caught in thoughts and feelings, know they’re there but not control me. Making things clearer when everything feels confusing, when we don’t understand each other, or when we’re really scared. There is no happiness is in hiding how you feel or in acting like the cool dude. The Happiness is in Love! XXX
