To develop a new Business Strategy was the goal of a client who came from the Netherlands for a 2 weeks coaching.
His company was specialized in consulting institutions and public administrations. During the last few years, he had lost his enthusiasm about his work and complained, his clients just did not get it. It was harder and harder to introduce positive changes in those systems. People were narrow-minded and not open and cooperative for the innovation he was contracted to introduce. It was still a very lucrative business, but he has lost the joy in his work.
Coaching is all about helping people to become aware and responsible (free to respond/act in ways that are positive and meaningful). I decided to create the Coaching as a combination of Walking to synchronize body and mind, awareness training to align his perception with this true values and indoor Coaching sessions with NLP, Relaxation exercises and blackboard to bring it all out on black and white.
Conclusion: he realized he had become like an opponent of his clients – or the employees of his clients. We worked on discovering his true mission. He did not just want to give them an innovative pill they had to swallow to change their systems, he wanted them to “heal” those institutions. In fact, he used that untypical word, explaining that he wanted to empower those people to be the change they want to see in the world – heal themselves and their surroundings.
He had expected to come home with a phrase such as “be the best in the business” and what he got instead was a much deeper and wider strategy – help institutions heal themselves – self empowerment.
Why do I share this story? In 15 year of coaching the summary would be this: you want a change in your life, then change yourself. The way to face the world is the way your project into the world and the world mirrors back to you. The real work is listening inside and becoming aware of what is really going on inside. Then, become responsible -respond versus react like a machine running programs of “the matrix”.
Business Coaching is coaching of “partnerships”. Once understood, that we all do work together and need to appreciate one’s own value and speciality just as much as every other team-members, things start to change. Tool: Awareness of oneself and the surroundings and new communication systems versus complaints and excuses. It can be a lot of fun, depending how we play. It only works if the heads of the company are part of the cooperative partnership and share that vision of being part of one big whole. The business organization does not have to change, however, communication does.
